The game finished 3-0 but that was not a true reflection on the game that United could have finished with at least another three.
Dimitar Berbatov got the nod to start by Fergie and the striker looks to be in a better frame of mind this term as he repaid the bosses faith in him by drilling home the opening goal after 33 minutes.
And he should have got his second after half time after Darren Fletcher had doubled United’s lead, before the old master himself, Ryan Giggs rounded things off with a superb goal that was brilliantly set up by Paul Scholes who put in a man of the match performance.
Newcastle did have a chance to take the lead when he got his head to Joey Barton’s corner but could not keep the ball on target. United quickly learnt from this and kept him pretty much contained for the rest of the game.
Berbatov’s opener was typical United, Antonio Valencia did well to win the ball and laid it off to John O’Shea, he in turn found Scholes and his perfectly timed ball was fired home by Berbatov from a tight angle.
Fletcher’s goal came when the ball reached him from Rooney who mis-controlled but Fletcher still managed to turn and finish for 2-0.
And it was the tracer-bullet accuracy of Giggs that proved to be the difference late when he volleyed home after he had been picked out by Scholes.
