The Glazer family have overruled Alex Ferguson and ordered him to sell Ruud van Nistelrooy to Real Madrid.

Manchester United boss Ferguson insists striker Van Nistelrooy should be off-loaded only for a minimum £15million.

But the club's American owners want to generate cash for new signings — so Real are expected to capture the striker for £10.3m today.

The shock intervention of the Glazers will infuriate his manager, who claimed on Wednesday that Madrid's new offer was a "two-bob improvement" and that United were prepared to dig in for the missing £5m.

The Glazers made it clear that achieving Fergie's transfer goals depended heavily on generating hard cash from the immediate sale of Van Nistelrooy.
