He expected to be left out of the FA Cup game against Exeter and tomorrow’s Carling Cup semi-final first-leg at Chelsea. But he wants his first-team jersey back for the Premiership clash at Anfield.

If Northern Ireland keeper Carroll, 27, is left out he will know he has little chance of being the long-term No 1.
