Robin van Persie, who will undoubtedly become the top scorer in the English Premier League for the second season in a row, has finally won his maiden League title in his first season with the all-conquering Red Devils. The Netherlands striker, who had rejuvenated his worth last season by single handedly carrying Arsenal on his shoulders to a third place finish in the standings, opted to leave the North London club for Manchester United in a quest for trophies, and his move has paid off handsomely. The joy and relief were quite evident in his face when he was celebrating with the United players and faithful yesterday in Old Trafford after the trophy ceremony. And none deserved it more than him.
Van Persie famously claimed a few months back that an extended spell of trophy-barren seasons at Arsenal has made his hair ?greyer? and left him wondering if he would ever be able to win the league. The weight of another empty season at the Emirates 2011-12 set him back further and although he excelled individually, Arsenal lacked the strong presence in other areas on the pitch to establish a firm hand in the title race. A thorough professional who lets his boots do the talking for him, van Persie quietly continued to notch goal after goal, and was the best thing Arsenal had after the loss of their captain the previous season to Barcelona.
His decision to move to United this season has been a very bold step given the fierce competitive rivalry between Arsenal and Manchester United. However, he justified himself with his brilliant performances in front of the goal and his refusal to celebrate goals against his former club this season has been his most admirable quality and this, I believe, would make him remain highly respected among the Arsenal faithful in the years to come.
Van Persie?s dream might have been finally fulfilled this season, but with competition on the rise in the Premier League, the next season promising better quality from the biggest London clubs, the potential arrival of Jose Mourinho to the League again, and United finally moving into a new era, the chances of extending that dream might just become a tad bit tougher and challenging. But now that he has finally tasted the dish he had been waiting all these years for, he might not want to let it leave his grasp again for some time to come. Whatever happens, van Persie might no longer be concerned now if his ?greying? continues for the right reasons at his new home!
