SOME of the United players spoke yesterday about the
magnitude of their achievement.
Roy Keane (who was suspended): Believe it or not, I still
strongly fancied us to win the match even when we were 1-0
down and it was injury time, and I was proved right. You can
be the most skilful player in the world, but if you don't
have the heart and spirit, then it's no good - and we proved
that against Bayern. I can't complain because at this time
last year I was struggling with my career because of
injuries and now I've lifted two trophies in the past week.
It's obviously not the same feeling as if I'd played, but
we're all in it together. We looked the stronger team, they
were obviously settling for 1-0 and you can't really do that
against top players. Please God, we'll be back in the final
next year.
Jaap Stam: We have scored a lot of late goals at the end of
games this season. We did it against Liverpool and we have
done it here. I just think there is no better spirit than
this.
Ryan Giggs: I have always said we would never be judged as a
great team until we had won the European Cup. We have done
that now and I think we deserve to be ranked along with the
Liverpool teams of the Eighties. Hopefully this is just a
stepping stone and we can go on and dominate like they did.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: We just had to score goals after the
pressure we had. Someone had to do it. The team spirit is
unbelievable. Everyone works for each other. We are all in
this together. If anyone wonders why I stay at Manchester
United, this is it.
Denis Irwin: As you get older, you make sure that you take
it all in, but nothing can beat what happened at the end.
You can't buy moments like that - Ireland would have to win
the World Cup to match it. Roy [Keane] was sorely missed in
the match, but he put it behind him to cheer the lads on.
Roy handled it with great dignity, but that's just the type
of person he is.
