From Soccernet:

‘Liverpool`s Jerzy Dudek handed Diego Forlan the opening goal with a shocking mistake - and blew the Premiership title race wide open as Manchester United claimed a crucial 2-1 victory.

The Liverpool goalkeeper has held his place in the Anfield side despite a string of recent errors but the error which cost Sander Westerveld his place at Anfield 18 months ago was no worse than the one Dudek managed to hand United victory today.

The sides were locked in battle, United just holding the edge, when Dudek fumbled a back pass and gifted Forlan the first of his two quick-fire goals.

Chris Kirkland will play on Wednesday in the Worthington Cup, and a solid display could see Dudek consigned to the sidelines for some while after his latest error.

Forlan belted another two minutes later, and a late effort from Reds skipper Sami Hyypia was not enough to deny United, who ended their run of five successive defeats by the men from Anfield.

United were more dangerous down the flanks, Solskjaer troubling Liverpool with a series of whipped-in crosses as Liverpool squandered possession too easily. Baros was replaced by Heskey after 53 minutes.

That should have given Liverpool the edge, but they could not account for Dudek`s howler.

Jamie Carragher's 64th-minute headed backpass should have been collected with ease, but the Pole managed to spill the ball under no pressure and Forlan snapped up possession and squeezed his shot home from an acute angle.

Two minutes later Forlan struck again. This time there was nothing Dudek could do as Giggs fed Forlan on the right of the box and the young striker rifled the ball home.

Hyypia halved the deficit with a driven shot through a packed box on 82 minutes after Diouf had battled for the ball. Two minutes later Hamann's 20 yarder was tipped onto the crossbar by Barthez. From then on United concentrated on defence and sent on a string of defenders to keep Liverpool out.
