VERON GONE

Speaking about the move on MUTV, Fergie had this to say:

“It's always difficult to let good players go. When the
first opportunity concerning Juan Sebastian Veron and
Chelsea came up I initiated the interest in Kleberson
because I felt Kleberson was one for the future and in the
long term was good for Manchester United.

“The initial response from Chelsea was that they didn't come
back and we carried on with the Kleberson deal. The
situation was we had a choice of central midfield players
and then when another offer came in for Seba we decided to
take it. I think there would have been problems ahead with
the players in midfield.

“It's worth in the overall package a lot of money to us and
it does enable me to bring in a young midfield player
[Kleberson] to the club. The overall package in terms of
what we save on his salary and what we get from Chelsea made
it difficult to turn down. I don't think we needed that -
it was more to do with the number of midfield players we
had. We are very, very well off in that department. He was a
marvellous player - very good skill. We were very happy with
him.

“We've added three players but we do need two players,
possibly up front but we do need a defender, that's
something we are looking at. There's clubs selling because
the gravy train has stopped at the moment - there's one
massive buyer, that's Chelsea, and the rest are trying to be
sensible. We at United have always kept a good ship, very
well balanced in terms of salaries and money paid out and we
are always competitive in terms of winning things.”

Peter Kenyon confirmed that it was a purely football
decision:

"Selling Seba was a footballing decision. We got an offer
and the price eventually was acceptable. It's all part and
parcel of restructuring the team and ultimately balancing
what we think we need for next season. In light of other
players we have got, we felt we should take the offer from
Chelsea and do other things with the team. We've got
Kleberson who'll fill [Veron's] role.

"The transfer was started by an approach from Chelsea. As I
intimated the first offer was not acceptable and now the
club have come back and we have accepted it. The sentiment
here is that it is a just decision with the football side
and value being right. There is no suggestion there is any
other rationale.”

Veron himself has said he feels that he can perform in
English football, and that he didn’t feel that Fergie
trusted him towards the end of his United career:

"Ferguson trusted me when I first arrived. But later on it
seemed we didn't understand each other as well. There were
times when I felt he preferred some of my team-mates. I
think I'll understand Claudio Ranieri better because of the
language. I can do a job in English football - and in London
that will be reaffirmed."
