From The Star, Hong Kong:

More than 1,000 people queued overnight to snap up the best seats for a Manchester United exhibition match in Hong Kong when the box office opened yesterday.

Some fans camped outside the 40,000 seater Hong Kong stadium for up to four days in torrential rain to get the pick of the seats for the July 23 match against a Hong Kong XI.

Manchester United has promised to bring top stars including England striker Wayne Rooney for the match, the team's first appearance in Hong Kong since 1999.

"Response is tremendous, so I think the tickets will go very quickly," said promoter Nikki Kemp as the box office began selling seats priced at between US$50 and US$150.

Both Brazil and Juventus have this year failed to fill more than half of the Hong Kong Stadium for exhibition matches, but the Manchester United game is expected to be a sell-out.

English Premier League football is hugely popular in Hong Kong with most games broadcast live and bars and clubs open until the early hours of Sunday morning to screen them.
