On Wednesday night Manchester United travel to the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu to face Real Madrid, in a game that will see many of the world?s great players face each other. But perhaps the most intriguing competition will be the tactical battle between the mutually respected Jose Mourinho and Sir Alex Ferguson.
With Mourinho publically stating that he is interested in a move back to England, and recent questions about Ferguson?s health ? could Mourinho be viewing the Champions League clash as a platform to audition for the next Manchester United manager?s post?
Real Madrid have been in poor form this season by their extremely high standards, and Ferguson believes that Mourinho is desperate to win the Champions League which would be a fine statement indeed.
When Sir Alex does decide to retire, his involvement in the recruitment process will probably be quite involved. Who?s to say what conversations himself and Mourinho have had (over a nice bottle of red) about the longevity of Sir Alex?s reign? And, with a record like Jose Mourinho?s, who in world football would be a better choice?
However the teams fare on Wednesday night, Mourinho will be guaranteed a second audition on 5th March when the teams meet again at Old Trafford, where a dominant display from his Madrid side could make the Glazer family sit up and take notice. Whatever happens on the pitch, it will be interesting to see what role Mr Mourinho returns to Old Trafford in on his next visit.
Do you think Mourinho will be the next Manchester United manager?
