UNITED STARS IN CAR CRASH
Youth team players Callum Flanagan and Phil Marsh, who were both in the squad for Tuesday’s Youth Cup tie against City, were injured in a car crash yesterday. From the MEN:
A Manchester United youth team footballer was airlifted to hospital yesterday after suffering "serious injuries" in a road crash, police said.
Phil Marsh had to be cut free from wreckage after the accident in Carrington Lane in the Ashton on Mersey area of Manchester.
The 17-year-old was taken to the city's Wythenshawe Hospital suffering from fractures and a head injury, a police spokeswoman said.
Marsh was in the passenger seat of a black Honda Civic which was being driven by fellow youth team player Callum Flanagan.
The club's reserve team match at Birmingham City tonight was cancelled as a result of the crash.
A Manchester United spokesman said: "The Birmingham City reserve game has been cancelled due to two Manchester United youth players being involved in a serious road traffic accident, on Carrington Lane, early this afternoon.
"Phil Marsh was airlifted to hospital. He has a broken leg, an arm injury and facial cuts and bruises. He is in a stable condition.
"Callum Flanagan suffered no significant injuries and did not receive hospital treatment."
The players' car collided with a X-registered blue Ford Fiesta at 1.20pm.
The police spokeswoman said: "The passenger in the Honda Civic had to be freed from the car and he was taken to Wythenshawe Hospital suffering from fractures and a head injury.
"The driver of the Ford Fiesta, a woman believed to be in her 20s, was taken to Trafford General Hospital for treatment following the accident.
"She is believed to be in a poorly condition."
It was revealed later that the woman involved in the crash suffered a serious leg injury, which is not believed to be life threatening.
Carrington Lane was closed while the vehicles were removed and debris was cleared from the road.
Both players were in United's youth team squad for last night's FA Youth Cup fourth round defeat of rivals Manchester City.
Marsh was a substitute but did not figure, while Flanagan came off the bench to score with a 76th-minute header in United's 2-0 victory.
