Manchester United face the prospect of Bayern Munich making an official complaint to UEFA if they refuse to accept that Owen Hargreaves is not for sale.
Bayern chiefs are furious with the England international after he admitted his recovery from a broken leg was being driven by the dream of joining United in January.
United had a £10m bid for Hargreaves, 25, rejected in the summer, but boss Sir Alex Ferguson has continued to insist he will not give up on signing him.
A source close to the German club said: "Bayern were not happy with the conduct of United after Hargreaves had such an impact at the World Cup.
"If it continues then United will not be allowed to get away with it again. UEFA will be informed of what has been happening."
