United lost the first game of the pre-season tour of America 4-2 on penalties after the game had finished goalless. Although United lost and Alan Smith had a penalty saved Fergie seemed very pleased with the young inexperienced side he put out especially debutant Alan Smith and Jonathon Spector He said:

"It was hard for Alan, he had a tough job up front on his own but he did
exceptionally well,"

"Jonathan showed great potential,"

"He has great awareness of his defensive duties and coped very well.

"Playing 90 minutes with Roy Keane is worth 20 games with some others and
Roy's composure will have got through to him."
