The midfielder is viewed as a key component for the future of Republic of Ireland football by manager Trapattoni and Gibson claimed his first goal for his country with a stunning effort against Wales on Tuesday evening.
Trapattoni wants to see Gibson fulfil his potential, but believes that will only happen by playing regular football and is concerned that may not happen at Old Trafford.
"He can do more," Trapattoni said. "He has big potential. If I was Gibson I would go to another group where I always play. With this you can build.
"Manchester is Manchester and it is an important club, but sometimes the young players need to play, play, play. It gives them confidence."
