From The Times, quoting Toshack:
"I said to him, ‘You should have come out and trained, you might have enjoyed it.
"We had a laugh about it. I think if I’d said that to him when I first took over, he’d have punched me on the nose."
The winger admitted in his recent autobiography that he and his team-mates would scream at Toshack and "call him every name under the sun" when he appeared on the television screen in the dressing-room to criticise their performances under the popular Mark Hughes, but, having briefly considered retiring from international football, he is revelling in his role as captain under Toshack.
"Ryan has led well by setting the right example.
"We’re delighted with the way he has taken it on," the manager said. "His attitude to it has been spot-on. It’s not a question of being a ranter and raver. The greatest footballer this country has ever produced (John Charles) wasn’t like that, either."
