After Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored undoubtedly one of the greatest goals in history last night against England to win the match for Sweden 4-2, I decided to look at other great goals and compare them to what the burly Swede managed last night. An overhead kick from 25 yards is an incredible feat, but how does it rank to these other five great goals?
Wayne Rooney vs Mancehster City. February 2011. Old Trafford.
With the scores tied at 1-1, Luis Nani sent in a cross to the Manchester City box which Wayne Rooney sent in to the top corner. With his back to goal, he lept in the air and using a similar technique to Ibrahimovic and scored the winner against Manchester City in an incredibly heated derby.
Thierry Henry v Manchester United. September 2000. Highbury
Henry received the ball 20 yards out and while holding off his marker, Henry, in one fluid motion ? flicked the ball up, spun and volleyed the ball over a helpless Fabien Barthez and into the top corner. We saw many remarkable moments by the Arsenal legend during his time at the Club, but perhaps nothing better than that.
Paulo di Canio v Wimbledon March 2000. Upton Park.
Voted goal of the season for 2000, and seen by many of the greatest goal in the Premier League era, with a volley against Wimbledon. It was named the Premier League goal of the decade in September 2009 with 30% of votes. This is why.
Peter Crouch v Manchester City March 2012. Britannia Stadium
A shame such a goal did not receive the Premier League Goal of The Season Award. In a game which potentially had serious affect on Manchester City's title chances, the colossal Crouch received a pass from his team mate, before flicking it up and with his back almost to goal, swung at it - just to see it fly past a helpless Joe Hart and in to the opposite top corner.
Marco Van Basten Euro 1988 Semi-Final vs West Germany
Arguably one of the greatest players ever to play, Van Basten, waiting at the back post was found by his team mate. As the cross came in over the top, van Basten, first time hit it from such an acute angle and into the top corner. Although his career was blighted with injury, the Dutchman was capable of the spectacular, and as Holland went on to win the tournament, he was a key figure in the Dutch side.
That's my list for Top Five Goals that could match Zlatan Ibrahimovic's last night. Leave me a comment below if you think I've missed one out, or if the big Swede's goal tops them all!
