‘WHY did Manchester United spend £30m on Rio Ferdinand ?
I am not saying that to stir a hornets' nest, nor do I wish to be disrespectful to the big man, but I am sure I am not the only one asking that question at the moment.
Don't get me wrong, I think Rio is a great defender. He is a world class player and one of the best in the game, but you have to ask yourself how he is going to get back into the United defence after the way the so-called stand-ins have performed.
As far as Wes Brown, Mikael Silvestre and John O'Shea are concerned, it has been wonderful, but it is going to give Fergie one heck of a headache soon. How can he possibly break up a defence which did not concede a goal against Liverpool, Arsenal and Deportivo La Coruna?
How can you leave out a £30m player? Fergie's new rule has to be "If it ain't bust why fix it?"
If he has had a weakness in the past, it has probably been his tendency to fiddle about with the team when it was not necessary. He seemed to make changes for no reason and sometimes lost games because of it.
Injuries or suspensions give you an option to change your line-up but when things are going well, even if it means leaving your costliest asset sitting on the bench, then so be it.’
