There have been a number of jokes along the lines of a man who is shipwrecked on an island and is finally rescued with his first question: "Has Diego Forlan scored for Manchester United yet?" To this could almost be added: "Has Ryan Giggs scored another Premiership goal at Old Trafford yet?" Giggs scored one and made the other two in a workmanlike, rather than spectacular, victory at the Valley (Charlton could soon be the subject of a similar joke as they have not won a home League game since beating Chelsea on March 2).
Yet Giggs's League goals at the 'Theatre of Dreams' are becoming collector's items - just one in three years and one month, which came against Coventry 15 months ago. Why this should be is difficult to fathom. United can be the most potent of attacking forces and Giggs is often the focal point of a forward line who have consistently hit the target despite their recent hiccup. If Giggs is to have a dip in goals it should be away from home, but United's travelling supporters tend to see the Welshman's Premiership strikes. It was Giggs, labelled "fantastic" by his manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who was the driving force behind United's second-half comeback.
