THE WHEELS ARE FALLING OFF

Already struggling to finance the deal for their new
stadium, Arsenal have today announced a £9.47m loss for the
six months to November 30th. The BBC report that chairman
Peter Hill-Wood is keen to reduce wage packets, quoting him
as saying:

"In our 2002 annual report, I referred to the control and
potential future reduction of our player wage bill and this
remains an objective. However, it is one we can only
progress, in the light of market conditions, as new players
arrive or existing contracts come up for renewal."

With contract negotiations due this summer for Pires, Vieira
and Bergkamp, it may not all be plain sailing for Arsenal
this year. Particularly with Pires criticising the club
yesterday for their treatment of Vieira and hinting that he
may not stay if Arsenal don’t show enough ambition in the
transfer market over the close season.
