THE OLD AND THE NEW

From Daily Telegraph:
‘The English love affair with Beckham is coming to an end and the one with Eriksson has long been over. Flexibility and the ability to alter formations is an asset but the great managers are never bounced into changing tactics. You can understand why Eriksson wanted to make changes after the Denmark defeat; there is nothing wrong with 4-5-1, it is a system a lot of Premiership clubs play, but there is plenty wrong when Wayne Rooney is the 'one'. Rooney is a fantastic footballer, who could probably play in any position on the pitch except one - the lone striker. His game is completely unsuited to the role and you have to ask why Eriksson chose to do it when he had Jermain Defoe, who had done well for England in his limited appearances, available?’
