THE GAME TONIGHT

Ferguson:

"Of course we will make chances, but my experience in some European games is that we have sometimes missed chances, particularly in the two semi-final ties [against Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund] here. So if we can create the chances and take a percentage then I think we have a massive chance.

"I think we are in a good position. We are pleased we scored after going down to 10 men in Rome and when we did score they became very nervous. Our attacking impetus will be much stronger and more apparent but of course we need to perform well and take our chances."

"I don't think it is any more tense than any other European tie.

"Certainly no different to when the great Juventus teams came here or when Milan came here two or three years ago. We have been at this stage many times. Losing a game is not an unusual factor in football, everyone loses at some time. It's what you do about it that makes your team and I am confident about that.

"Over the years, all the great sides have been here and the atmosphere has always been fantastic. We expect that again tomorrow.

"I loved the atmosphere in Rome. I could play those games every week.

"Hopefully our fans can repeat that kind of noise and we will be OK because the players have proved they have the character to meet this kind of challenge.

"This team has always been able to bounce back from set-backs. We have done it this season after we lost at home to Arsenal and then went on a great run.

"We lost in the New Year to West Ham and then went on another great run. Anyone can lose a game but it is what you do about it that makes a team.

"I think we are in a good position in this tie. I am pleased that, having played with 10 men for an hour, we were able to get a goal. When we did, Roma became very nervous.

"Our attacking impetus will be even stronger in this second leg than in the first. I think we will make chances and we have to take them.

"If we take a percentage of the chances we create, we have a massive chance."

More:

"We stayed in Italy and we missed the footage that was shown over here.

"But I have seen one or two photographs and they don't look very nice at all. Everyone was appalled at some of the pictures and Uefa will have to have a thorough investigation. It is the only way you can find these things out."

"I don't anticipate any problems. The security at Old Trafford is fantastic. Roma fans should not fear a thing."

About the team:

"I will freshen up as best as I can - we have Evra back and Saha will be fit to go on the bench.

"He just felt his hamstring tighten a little in training on Friday. He is a bit cautious rather than it being a real injury, so he should be OK for tomorrow.

"If he is on the bench, I will certainly pick him and Smithy for the Cup semi-final next Saturday."

And Ferguson spoke of the Roma tie, and the semi-final against Watford, as light relief from the pursuit of the Premiership title, in which United now lead Chelsea by three points.

"These two cup games have come at a good time to give us a 10-day break from the league," said the manager. "The important thing is to recover and we will do that."

Rooney:

"It's different playing against Italian teams, it's like a game of chess really, the game's slower and it's a lot more organised.

"When we faced Milan, myself and Cristiano were really young and we were still trying to learn the game. But I think since then both of us have improved and we have matured a lot, especially Cristiano who has been winning games on his own. This season he has been unbelievable and at the moment he is by far the best player in the world.

"There was a lot of talk about the fact I've not scored for a while in the Champions League and hopefully now the talking will stop and I can concentrate on trying to get more goals," said Rooney. "I don't know why I had not scored for so long. Maybe I should have scored on some occasions, on others the keeper has made good saves, but it will be a relief to finally get the goal - and hopefully it will turn out to be one of the most important I've ever scored.

"It is important the reaction from the weekend is a positive one.

"We are disappointed with the weekend result but this is a different tournament.

"We have played well all season and we don't want to let ourselves down now."

O'Shea:

"What a game to look forward to.

"Everyone will be buzzing for the Roma game, and so will the crowd. It will be a special game, and we can't wait.

"It was disappointing to lose at Portsmouth, especially with the number of chances we created.

"But we were coming back from Europe where we played a lot of the game with ten men, and going to Pompey was always going to be difficult.

"There are plenty of twists left this season and if you had offered us this position at the start of the season we would have snapped your hand off.

"We definitely deserved a draw at Portsmouth, with some of the chances we created, but with the character we have from the manager through the staff to the players, we will bounce back, without a doubt."

Carrick:

"It is going to be a great occasion.

"I am sure Old Trafford will be bouncing.

"We are really looking forward to it and we know the crowd will get right behind us. We have given ourselves every chance and, come the day, we will be ready.

"Once we went behind on Wednesday it was vital for us to score.

"Wayne found a great finish and that definitely gives us an opportunity.

"I wouldn't say it was a good result but when you take everything into account, and the fact we went down to 10 men, it was not the end of the world. At half-time, we would probably have settled for that.

"We know the situation we are in.

"We have to score but we are always confident of doing that."

Totti:

"As a Roma supporter this game is more important to me than the World Cup final was.

"I want our fans to enjoy the experience of being here.

"Being a football fan is about supporting your team and I would appeal to ours just to enjoy the performance we intend to put on.

"It is an important game. As a Roma fan, it is more important than the World Cup final. We are playing against a huge team with great qualities but we have beaten them once already and we have to show the same attitude as we did against Lyon in the last round.

"I had a good feeling before that match and I have a good feeling now."

Roma's coach Luciano Spalletti about whether Totti will play:

"I need to see him in training and check on him."

The Telegraph:

During their stay in Rome, as they prepared for what could be a decisive encounter at Portsmouth, it was mooted that Sir Alex Ferguson might take his squad to the Vatican, just as Jack Charlton had gone with his Ireland players during the 1990 World Cup. In the end, the sheer numbers cramming into St Peter's Square for the Easter celebrations precluded it.

Frankly, Ferguson would have done better taking his injury-raddled squad to Lourdes; never has he been in greater need of miracle cures. When the Manchester United manager talks about the side that slalomed its way past every obstacle to the Treble, he will make one point. It suffered no injuries and, until the European Cup final, no suspensions.

As he makes his preparations for tonight's European Cup quarter-final with Roma, Ferguson has problems putting a coherent team together. He has no specialist right-back, two of his three most experienced centre-halves are injured, his first choice left-back has not kicked a ball in anger in more than a month. Louis Saha, his chief striking support for Wayne Rooney. is unfit and his most experienced central midfielder got himself suspended with a piece of brainless tackling in the first leg.

Overcoming a 2-1 deficit at home should not be beyond teams of United's resilience, and Roma are not in the class of the Juventus side that Roy Keane drove aside to take his players to the 1999 European Cup final.

We have proved ourselves a number of times and we are no more tense than for any other European tie," Ferguson said. "Can you compare Roma with the great Juventus teams that have come here, or with the Milan of two years ago or with Real Madrid or Bayern Munich who have all come here? It is not going to be any more tense than those games. We have won eight championships; there was a bit of tension there."

It should be pointed out that the last time those clubs went to Old Trafford, they all achieved results that would see Roma through to the semi-finals this evening - or, in Juventus' case, extra time. Ferguson seemed genuinely puzzled when it was put to him that United had never overturned a first-leg defeat in the Champions League under his management.

Actually, United have failed five times to pull back a first-leg reverse and it was the first of those - the 1997 semi-final against Borussia Dortmund - that Ferguson called to mind yesterday. Then, United, having lost 1-0 in the Westfalen Stadium, squandered innumerable chances to snatch victory at Old Trafford.

The Indie:

Saha is out after reporting a tight hamstring in training, leaving Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Alan Smith vying for a starting role, and with Paul Scholes suspended following his dismissal in the first leg, plus Park Ji-Sung out for at least a fortnight with a knee problem, United are suffering in every department as they seek an emphatic response to successive defeats in Europe and in the Premiership.

"We always recover, we recover well," said the Scot. "We went on a long unbeaten run after losing to Arsenal in October, West Ham at New Year and Arsenal the season before. We have always recovered with long unbeaten runs. This club is made of that, it is not a problem for us. Losing a game is not unusual in football, it is what you do about it that makes a team.

"I think we are in a good position for this game. I'm pleased that we managed to get a goal with 10 men, and when we did, Roma became nervous for a period. Tomorrow our attacking impetus will be much, much stronger, much more apparent.

"I think we'll create chances but in my experience of Europe we have missed a lot of chances, particularly in two semi- finals here. If we can take them this time, we'll have a massive chance."
