He even had a little chuckle when chief executive David Gill appeared to show him the leaflet produced by the Independent Manchester United Supporters' Association which featured the head of Magnier and the slogan "Just Say Neigh".

He said afterwards how much he appreciated the support.

"It was great,I wouldn't say it gives me inner strength, though - I have never lacked that. It was a terrific reception. I have always appreciated they have been behind me over the years. They showed how much they love Manchester United."

Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy said:

"We know what is going on. But as players we can’t let it affect us - and I haven’t seen any difference in the manager either.He is the same as always. That’s why he has been in the job for so long. He always manages to stay focused on the football side."
