But in a statement today, Terry said that he had received a message from Ferdinand wishing him good luck in the role he has retaken and he has even offered his support if it is needed.
Terry spoke for the first time since being told he was to wear the captain’s armband once again, but while he accepts that the decision might not be seen as a popular one, he insists that he has learnt a lot in his year out.
Terry said: "Rio called me which was a very nice touch and goes to show what a great man Rio is.

"I'm not going to be everybody's cup of tea, but it is the decision the manager has taken. Respect for the players around me and the manager has always been there.
"On a personal note I'm very delighted to get the armband back...I know what is asked of me on the pitch and away from it. Maybe the manager looked into that as well, that I had kept my head down and concentrated on playing well for club and country."
