TED BECKHAM

Father Ted reveals that David had a dummy until he was six, was good with Lego and had lots of toy cars. At his first match watching United at White Hart Lane young David told his father that one day he would play for United.

Turgid paragraphs litter the page:

‘What he lacked in size, he made up for in courage. Sometimes when we went training, he’d ask to join in with my mates. We’re talking big lads, fully grown men. A couple of times I said: “All right, come on then. But don’t keep hold of the ball because if you do, you’re going to get clumped.”

Two or three times he did get knocked over and came off the pitch crying. I just said: “See what I mean?” But it was good for him and he was a fast learner. That’s where he learnt about the importance of controlling the ball and passing it quickly. As he got to train with us more and more, the bigger lads would be looking to give him the ball because he was so good. When they saw what he could do, he earned their respect.’
