Team of the week 050312

Last updated : 05 March 2012 By DSG

With the season edging closer the end, this weekend threw up some vital games at both ends of the table.

Manchester United were hoping to crank up the pressure on Manchester City as they travelled to White Hart Lane. While Newcastle faced Sunderland in the North East Derby.

Here is the Football.co.uk Premier League team of the week.

Position : Goalkeeper
Wojciech Szczesny (Arsenal)
The Polish keeper is cementing himself as a vital part of Arsenal's team. His save from Dirk Kuyt's spot-kick and follow-up was world class. It was one of the best goalkeeping performances of the season and his clean sheet was only spoiled after his own team mate put the ball past him.

Position: Defender
John O'Shea (Sunderland)
The experienced Irish international has been a key part of Sunderland's revitalised side since the appointment of Martin O'Neill as manager. O'Shea was solid throughout the North East Derby, as Sunderland held onto their 1-0 lead up until the 90th minute of the game.

Position: Defender
Steven Caulker (Swansea City)
Swansea recorded their 10th clean sheet of the season after a 2-0 win over struggling Wigan Athletic. The Swans were resilient defensively, with on-loan Tottenham defender Steven Caulker being the pick of the bunch. He provided an assist for Sigurdsson's opener and was unbeatable at the back.

Position: Defender
Carlos Cuellar (Aston Villa)
The Spanish defender has filled in at full-back for Villa on many occasions but found himself in the centre of defence against Blackburn, he repaid the faith shown in him by Alex McLeish with a solid performance.

Position: Defender
John Arne Riise (Fulham)
The former Liverpool favourite has yet to score for Fulham since his arrival in the summer. This however has not affected his performances, as he proved against Wolves on Sunday. Riise destroyed Wolves down the left hand side all afternoon and was an integral player in the 5-0 win.

Position: Midfielder
Youssouf Mulumbu (West Bromwich Albion)
West Brom provided one of the defining results of the season after recording a 1-0 victory over Chelsea. The match sparked the sacking of Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas the following day. Congolese defensive midfielder Mulumbu put in a powerful performance in the middle of the park and didn't allow Chelsea any time on the ball.

Position: Midfielder
Gylfi Sigurdsson (Swansea City)
The Icelandic midfielder has been an excellent addition to Swansea's squad since arriving in January. He scored two screamers on Saturday against Wigan to make it three goals and two assists in just seven appearances for Swansea.

Position: Midfielder

Ashley Young (Manchester United)
Two quality goals from Ashley Young were the difference between the two teams when United travelled to Spurs on Sunday. Adding to his goal midweek against the Netherlands, Young must be almost a certainty for a place in the England squad at Euro 2012.

Position: Forward
Clint Dempsey (Fulham)
Once again the American was in scintillating form. Two more goals from Dempsey takes his tally to 18 for the season in all competitions. Both goals were of the highest quality from a man who is quickly being considered as the greatest ever footballer from the United States.

Position: Forward
Pavel Pogrebnyak (Fulham)
Adding to the brace from Dempsey, was Russian forward Pogrebnyak, who bagged himself a hat-trick against Wolves. Five goals in three games is an excellent return from the man who signed for Fulham in January. He also boasts an impressive statistic, his five shots on target for Fulham have all resulted in goals!

Position: Forward
Robin van Persie (Arsenal)
Yet again the Dutchman was the saviour for Arsenal. His late winner against Liverpool was his 10th winning goal of the season and now takes his tally for the campaign to an impressive 31 strikes. Two more goals against Liverpool, the second being a spectacular volley, similar to his strike against Everton earlier in the season.
