A police inquiry following allegations against the former Reds' chief executive has now been completed.
The 57-year-old multi-millionaire has already been informally questioned about the allegations, but now it is expected that he will be interviewed again - this time under caution - within a matter of days rather than weeks.
The man who hired ultra-successful manager Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford is also credited with the floating of the club on the Stock Exchange in 1991 for £18m. But his private life, tainted by lurid sex scandal headlines, has proved to be his downfall and has effectively ended the Edwards' dynasty at the club.
