Smith told the Sun: "When I was seven, I started doing BMX racing. I could do tricks and when I was eight, I was the British champion. I still love my bikes to this day and the BMX trophy is the only thing I’ve ever won. That’s why I would love to win something because I’ve never won anything in football. We still have a chance in all of the competitions and this club is all about winning silverware. I want to be a part of that."
Smith picked up an ankle injury in the final minute of the first leg of the League Cup semi at Stamford Bridge two weeks ago, but he has trained over the last couple of days and is set to start tonight.
"Alan Smith trained today and if he comes through OK then he is certainly a consideration," said Ferguson.
"Darren Fletcher misses the game because he got an ankle injury on Saturday. I'll be assessing the situation after training. It is a temptation to play a strong team," added Ferguson. "I'm giving it serious consideration. I've got Saturday's FA Cup game against Middlesbrough to think about. And then we've got the league game against Arsenal on the Tuesday. So, we have to spread the load."
"Having Louis Saha, John O'Shea, Wes Brown, Quinton Fortune and Alan Smith back gives me great options."
