From The Sunday Mirror:
Manchester United could use Alan Smith as bait to land Wayne Rooney from Everton.
Smith, 23, joined United from Leeds only six weeks ago in a £7million deal.
Everton tried to buy the striker before United boss Sir Alex Ferguson grabbed his signature.
And even though he is yet to make his United debut, Smith could now be pivotal in United's bid to buy Rooney in a £30m deal.
United will offer the debt-ridden Merseysiders £20m in cash and the choice of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Diego Forlan and David Bellion - but none of those names appeals to Everton boss David Moyes.
Ferguson would have thrown Nicky Butt into the equation but he will join Newcastle for £4m.
