Sir Alex was very happy to see Rooney end his baron run in front of goal when he netted a penalty in the first half won by Ryan Giggs.
He said: "Rooney`s goal stops all the negative headlines but it was his all round performance that stood out for me.
"His game was full of energy and he enjoyed his football. He had trained all week and looked much more like himself."
"I have said time and time again that strikers like him want to score and he got off the mark for this season with a good penalty. But it was his performance that`s what we should be talking about."
About the team in general, he added: "Maybe we could have scored more goals but it was a good team performance. The thing that pleased me most was that it was a collective effort."
