Manchester United have confirmed that midfielder Scott McTominay has undergone surgery for an ongoing groin injury, ruling him out of Scotland's squad for the upcoming international break.
The 24-year-old started in the Red Devils' 5-1 destruction of Leeds United on the opening day of the season, but was only able to make the bench for the 1-1 draw with Southampton a week later.
McTominay was struggling to overcome a groin issue which has been causing him some serious discomfort, and Man Utd have confirmed that the Scottish star has undergone surgery to resolve the problem.
“Scott has undergone surgery for an ongoing groin injury that was causing significant pain when playing,” an official statement from the club read.
“Having tried all other treatment options in pre-season, surgery was deemed necessary to resolve the issue.
“We hope to have him back soon.”
McTominay is a vital part of Man Utd's midfield, and his absence was felt in the draw with Saints. Solskjaer admitted prior to the match that the youth academy product was 'struggling', and eventually used him sparingly off the bench.
“Of course we want to keep continuity [in the side],” Solskjaer explained. “But Scott is struggling with an injury, hopefully we can get half an hour out of him if needed.”
The Scotland international will miss the Red Devils' trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers this weekend, and will then be forced to play no part in the international break, when the Tartan Army face Denmark, Moldova and Austria in their rounds of World Cup qualifiers.
Solskjaer will be hoping to have McTominay fit and available as quickly as possible when the Premier League returns, having come to rely on the midfield destroyer during his time in charge. He made 32 league appearances for Man Utd last season, and featured in all three of Scotland's Euro 2020 clashes this summer.
