SAHA WANTS GLORY
Victory over Arsenal, followed by a thumping League Cup victory from their
second string at Crewe, has left confidence fully restored.
Now the club are determined to keep their foot firmly on the pedal, with the
Gunners still rocking from a sorry Sunday at Old Trafford.
Louis Saha is set for more first-team football while Ruud van Nistelrooy is
banned for the next two games.
And the Frenchman is convinced Arsenal's eight-point lead over United can be
reeled in AND Alex Ferguson's men can reclaim the Premiership crown.
Striker Saha said: "Arsenal have been on a fantastic run. But I think United can
win the league, I really do.
"I hope we can go on a good run and keep growing in confidence.
"We've proved we can do that in the past. If we do so again, we'll have a very
good season."
Boss Ferguson agreed, declaring: "The players are suddenly starting to feel
unbeatable."
Saha believes that now United have their players all fit and ready again, they can turn the screw.
Arsenal have had the benefit of a settled side. But United are back to full strength and Saha thinks they can apply even more pressure on their rivals.
He added: "Arsenal have played with the same team for a couple of years, so
they have grown in self-belief. There has been a gap in the table between us so far. But having Rio Ferdinand back, plus players like Wayne Rooney and Alan
Smith, will make a huge difference.
they have grown in self-belief. There has been a gap in the table between us so far. But having Rio Ferdinand back, plus players like Wayne Rooney and Alan
Smith, will make a huge difference.
"We know we can do better and Arsenal know that, too.
"We've young players coming through and have been adjusting.
"We may still need a bit of time. But I'm very confident that, after the additions
this summer, we can improve."
Saha, himself, has had to overcome a frustrating run of injuries which have
punctuated his United career.
Yet a record of seven goals from 13 starts, plus six as sub, suggests there is a lot more to come.
Saha declared: "I've not been able to have a run in the team to make things
happen quickly.
But I feel sure I can stay fit and contribute and I'll get the opportunities to score. I want to be consistent, play as many games as I can and get plenty of goals.
"I just want to enjoy playing and, if I get four or five opportunities in a game, I
won't be happy to score only once."
But Smith, who scored, and Saha linked up well in the 3-0 victory at Gresty
Road. Now they are in line to keep their partnership going for United's trip to
Portsmouth on Saturday.
Saha is full of admiration for Smith, who is United's top scorer this season with
seven goals.
He said: "He's the strongest in the team if you're talking about holding the ball
and fighting spirit. He plays at a high level every game and I've been very
impressed by his work-rate.
"I knew the type of player he was from facing him when he was at Leeds. He was always strong, winning 50-50 tackles and showing great desire. Now he's
showing the same desire here."
Rooney could either be rested or form a three-man attack.
United fans would love to see the latter over the next couple of games at Pompey and at home to Manchester City.
The thought of Smith and Saha up front, with Rooney in behind, is enough to
give opposing managers nightmares.
Saha insisted: "Wayne's vision is unbelievable. You saw for England against
Wales what he can do with two strikers ahead of him.
"His first touch is astonishing. He doesn't need two or three touches to see what
is around him. He knows. He makes it look so easy.
"When you talk about great players, the main thing is their first touch whether it's Zidane or Scholesy. When you see a first touch like Wayne's, you know he's a fantastic footballer."
There will be a better chance of playing all three if Roy Keane can return to
fitness for this weekend after two games out with flu.
