And he insisted midfielder Darren Fletcher, who did not even make the bench at Cardiff, had more reason to feel aggrieved. Fletcher, who is United's only fit recognised central midfielder, was left out of the squad and Fergie suggested Van Nistelrooy could learn from how the Scot handled it.


"Darren's been involved almost all season and has also had to cope with playing alongside different midfield players," said Fergie. "He's always been available and played with Roy Keane, Paul Scholes, John O'Shea, Kieran Richardson, Ryan Giggs and Alan Smith.


"Darren has kept on going. He was really disappointed to have missed out on the final, but you have to accept these things and get on with it.
