Manchester United legend Roy Keane has bizarrely admitted that it was advice from a horoscope that saw him become a pundit, after it told him to stop ‘saying no to people’.
Keane’s first gig as a pundit was with ITV for their live coverage of the 2011 Champions League final between Manchester United and Barcelona at Wembley.
In 2008, the seven-time Premier League winner had said of being offered punditry jobs: “I'd rather go to the dentist”. But Keane has since gone on to become one of the most popular pundits on UK television, continuing his ITV work before also later joining Sky Sports in 2019.
It is with the latter that he has struck up an almost comedic love/hate relationship with ex-Manchester City and England defender Micah Richards.
Keane has now discussed his journey into punditry, which started a few months after being sacked by Ipswich in early 2011, with former Old Trafford teammate Gary Neville and long-serving Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher in a live show of The Overlap.
“I was never that bothered about [becoming a pundit]. When you're playing, you're in the zone and I never took too much notice of what people were saying,” he explained.
“I kind of just fell into it really when I just left Ipswich. United were in the Champions League final at Wembley and ITV got in touch asking if I would do a game.
“I was in my house in Ipswich thinking, ‘Will I, won't I?’ This is true, I think it was the Monday, a few days before the final, and they wanted an answer quickly.
“I read my horoscope that day and it said, ‘You can't keep saying no to people’, so I said, ‘I'll do it’. I don't mind just giving my opinion and then going home.”
