‘But former Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown has chosen an Urmston school hall to recreate the "Madchester" era he made famous.

Pupils at St Anthony's RC School were today enjoying the hippest school concert ever. [ yeah real groovy man]

Cult singer Brown sent his own band along to play a set to 512 lucky pupils - and promised, despite other commitments, he would try to make it himself.

The Manchester rocker is pals with head teacher Bill Byford, a former session musician and music journalist, who used his contacts to organise a thank-you gig for his pupils after a massive improvement in their GCSE results.

The school has enjoyed a remarkable turnaround since Mr Byford became head. This year, 46 per cent of the children achieved grades A to C in their GCSEs, compared to 30 per the year before.

Also performing were The Untouchables, rap star MC Kashif and Opus 1. Some of the pupils were also due to take to the stage to show their stuff.

He said: "The acts are high quality and some of them are capable of filling the M.E.N. Arena.

"I was the first person to write about the Stone Roses and I knew Ian Brown for years. I asked if they would come along because the results have been fantastic this year."
