Rooney is one of 4 United players nominated the World Player of the Year award. Also included are Cristiano Ronaldo, Ryan Giggs and Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Voting takes place this month and a three-man short-list will be made in November. The winner will be unveiled on December 20.

Meanwhile Rooney told United’s official mag:

"I want to get some silverware this season. There is no reason why we can't win the European Cup with the squad we've got.

"If I am not playing well, I can't have any complaints if I am not in the team. But my aim is to get a regular place in the side.

"I'm only 18 and have still got a lot of prove and learn but there is no better place to do it than here.”

And the Evening News and the Mirror seem to think the news of Rooney’s bird getting a pull at customs after a shopping trip to New York is worth reporting on their front page. The fact that such things happen to hundreds of people every day wasn’t mentioned.
