Rooney post match comments:
"With Chelsea winning yesterday we knew we had to beat City in order to keep ourselves in the title race," Rooney told Sky at the final whistle. "It was a tough game and we had to be patient because City got men behind the ball and defended well. We knew if we got chances in the second half we had to take them and we did that."
"When we went 1-0 up I think we were always comfortable that we weren't going to concede, and overall I think we put in a good performance. We've just got to keep winning our games and hopefully Chelsea will slip up. They're looking strong at the moment but if they do slip-up it's there for us to take."
Still playing for his place in the side:
"I played upfront on my own today which is my preferred position but I'll play anywhere as long as I'm in the team. I've been training hard, learning off the other players. I'll keep working hard with Ruud and Alan Smith on their way back I've got to play well to stay in the team.''
