The year was 2004 and England lost the game to Spain 1-0 with Rooney being pulled off at half time after having something of a bad game.
The 27 year old is however looking for much better when United visit on Wednesday night and hopes to help the Reds get something from the game to take into the second leg at Old Trafford.
United are expected to play Rooney up front along with Robin van Persie as they look to the threat of a bit of fire power.
Writing on his facebook page, he said: "Yes I've played at the Bernabeu once before for England against Spain, but it wasn't a good experience to be honest.
"I got subbed just before half time, and didn't really get many touches because Spain kept the ball really well. Hopefully this time it will go a lot better."
