Ferguson:
"It is a hairline fracture of the foot and, as with any fracture, we are saying two months to be on the safe side. Hopefully, it will be sooner but that is the timescale we are putting on it.
"He'll certainly be training by that time. Of course we will need to determine his fitness at that point, but that is the rough timescale to indicate when he will be back in the frame."
"It is a bad blow for England, there is no question about that.
"I'm disappointed for Steve, I really am. I spoke to him on Sunday night and along with my disappointment, I could sense Steve's disappointment, too.
"Wayne will obviously miss the September qualifiers against Israel and Russia but they should cope with them. And I would expect him to be back by October."
Eriksson:
"Of course England have other quality players, but it is a simple fact that in this country you don't have two Rooneys, you have only one. There are other good players but Rooney is Rooney and that's it.
"I feel very sorry for Rooney that he has had a similar injury to before the World Cup last year. It's unlucky and of course it's bad for Manchester United and it's bad for England."
