Rooney, 27, met with Sir Alex Ferguson two weeks ago, before the Scot?s departure from the club, and told him that his time was up at the club he?d joined in 2004.
Manchester United insist Wayne Rooney will not be sold and the appointment of David Moyes could alter things.
Moyes sold Rooney to Manchester United for ?25m when he was only 18 and it is unlikely that he will want to sell him again.
Rooney has since scored 141 goals in 278 games for United and has won 81 caps for England.
Rooney has scored 12 goals this season and has struggled to stay Manchester United?s top scorer after the arrival of Robin van Persie.
The player is about to enter the final two years of his contract and Manchester United do not plan to offer the player a new contract.
But a new start under Moyes, who he worked with at Everton, may re-organise him and convince the England international to stay at Old Trafford.
Moyes handed Rooney his Premier League debut as a 16-year-old in August 2002.
