ROONEY COMPARED TO DUNCAN EDWARDS

"When Wayne laid on England's third last Saturday, then the goal from Steven Gerrard on Wednesday, it was pure Duncan.

"They were talking about Owen catching Bobby because he was such a natural goal-scorer, but I said `was'. Like David Beckham, when you are not doing what you are supposed to be doing you get the finger pointed at you. And the question is: Will Owen be playing for England long enough to do it?

"It is a totally different proposition with Wayne. He is only 19-years-old and, if he can score four or five goals a year, it would take him there by the time he is 29. I am sure he can do it.

"He is an outstanding player and has got most of everything. He is a lot stronger and braver than most forwards and could go all the way and score more than Bobby. He has time on his side.

"Although Duncan had a bigger physique, Wayne is doing things he did but is an out-and-out forward, while Duncan was the all rounder. They are very similar in the way they brushed aside opponents, using strength and balance.

"I know it is hard to make comparisons, but other people have done it and will continue to do so as Wayne develops, because he is doing it along the same lines as Duncan."
