The Observer:
Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that his future lies abroad in the wake of his controversial World Cup campaign.
The Manchester United winger, whose Cheshire house has reportedly been targeted by vandals reacting to the part he played in Wayne Rooney's sending-off during the quarter-final against England, was speaking after Portugal's defeat to Germany in last night's third-place play-off.
'I think I should get out of Manchester. The circumstances are not right to keep playing in Manchester. In two or three days I will decide where to go. I always said I wanted to play in Spain. Nobody stood up for me at Manchester, although I did not do anybody any harm.'
The Sunday Times:
Speaking to Portuguese television after his country's 3-1 defeat by Germany in the tournament's third-place playoff in Stuttgart, Ronaldo, who has been linked with a summer move to Real Madrid, said: "I can't stay in England. Everyone knows my dream is to play in Spain. I'll work out my future over the next two or three days. They've been making a storm in a teacup in England. It's hard to go back to a country where you're not welcome."
The winger has become a tabloid hate figure after being seen to encourage the referee to discipline Rooney after his Old Trafford teammate stamped on Ricardo Carvalho in Gelsenkirchen.
Ronaldo could be one of several expensive faces arriving in Madrid as new coach Fabio Capello looks to rebuild the Spanish giants, beginning with players from his former club Juventus.
NOTW:
Cristiano Ronaldo last night launched a scathing attack on Alex Ferguson and Manchester United, insisting: "I have to quit and join Real Madrid."
The Portugal superstar blames boss Ferguson and owner Malcolm Glazer for forcing him out of Old Trafford in the wake of his World Cup bust-up with Wayne Rooney.
Ronaldo said: "They are the ones who are driving me away from the country.
"There are no conditions for me to continue at Manchester. I am calm and my agent Jorge Mendes is taking care of my situation. There is only one club I want to join."
Ronaldo accused Fergie and Glazer of failing to defend him after he helped get Rooney sent off in last week's World Cup quarter-final against England.
Ronaldo, speaking after Portugal had lost 3-1 to Germany in the third-place play-off, said: "Neither the president nor the manager have defended me over what happened. I don't want to be rude about anyone but they should have.
"I feel fragile at this time. I didn't do anything wrong to anybody. I was not at fault for what happened. I think my situation will be resolved in two or three days.
"To be honest it's very difficult to see that my future will be in Manchester. I've already said some time ago that I wish to play in Spain and I hope that can happen."
