RIO'S DERBY TARGET

Last updated : 08 October 2002 By editor

From the official site:

‘United now expect the England defender to be back on the field in three to four weeks' time, following the results of his operation on Sunday. The arthroscopic (or keyhole) surgery discovered that Rio had a lateral meniscus injury which required a menisectomy - this meant removing a small piece of damaged cartilage from his knee.

Rio's injury is very similar to the one sustained by Paul Scholes recently. Scholes recovered very quickly of course, and is now back in the side, scoring goals.

If the new estimate for Rio's return is correct, he could well make his return in the derby match at Manchester City on Saturday 9 November.’

The tabloids are still trying to whip up an ‘England backlash story but Tord Grip, Eriksson’s assistant, insisted there were no arguments over the timing of Ferdinand's operation.

'There is no problem at all with Manchester United,' he said. 'If Rio Ferdinand needs an operation, then he needs one. United must choose when is the best time. It is their choice and we fully understand why they are doing it.'
