RIO ROUND UP

Guess what? United are expected to wrap up the signing of Ferdinand today! How many times have we heard that? Here's all the latest news on the proposed transfer

After Ridsdale's statement Ferdinand told The Sun why he handed in a transfer request: "A footballer has a short career and you have to make the most of your opportunities.

"The chance to get back in the Champions League is too good to miss. It is a natural progression in a footballer's career to want to play at the top in Europe."

The Sun also reports what Ryan Giggs has to say about the chance of lining up alongside Rio. Giggs said: "Rio is an excellent defender.

"There are probably only a handful of players in the world who can strengthen Manchester United - and he is one of them.

"He will come in and improve this side. He will fit in at United perfectly."

It is also widely reported that United will have to make an official move today as Leeds head off on a Far East tour at the weekend. Will Rio be on the plane? His agent Pinhas Zahavi said: "He's under contract, there's no option and if nothing happens between the two clubs by then, he will go.''

However with the Champions League deadline on 8th August there is still plenty of time for the deal to drag on no matter where Ferdinand is.
