RIO CAN EXPECT THE WORST

The Evening News reports:
`Like Sir Alex Ferguson's British record capture, McQueen was the most
expensive player in the country in February 1978 when Reds' boss Dave
Sexton bought him for œ495,000.
"The reaction was very bad. It was really quite heavy stuff," recalls Gordon.
"I got a lot of hate mail. Plenty of it and they were horrible letters."
"Joe Jordan had left Leeds three months before me to move to United but it
was different for him because he was sold, however, I forced the issue. It was
my choice to go. They didn't like me for that."
"I recall going back to Elland Road not long after I'd moved to Old Trafford to
watch a match. I went with Joe but we were forced to leave before the end
because the abuse directed at me in particular was so bad.
I liked to think I was a popular figure at Leeds considering I had won the
Player of the Year award twice and not many do that. But they turned on me.
It was very bad almost 25 years ago but I get the impression it is even worse
now. But looking at Rio Ferdinand I get the impression that nothing fazes
him."
