REACTIONS FROM LAST NIGHT

Sir Alex Ferguson, "If you do not defend free-kicks coming into your box from 45 yards out, you do not deserve to win. You don't mind so much if a team opens you up but we should not be giving away goals like that. The defenders should have cleared it, there is no doubt in my mind about that.

"As far as I am concerned, the defenders should be attacking the ball. Instead we have let it bounce and left Tim Howard rooted to his line. Once Ryan scored I could not see us losing. I would have been quite happy for the game to go into extra-time but unfortunately, it was not to be.

"Frank Lampard's goal is something I will have to look at again, but it looked a soft one. The players themselves will be disappointed to have been in a semi-final and thrown it away. We were playing exceptionally well in the second half, but you need that little bit of luck in a cup tie which we didn't get.

"It was a great game and you couldn't divide the teams. They are a threat, especially on the counter attack when we went for it. We came through that quite well and I thought we had the far bigger momentum in the second half and played some excellent stuff. Ryan scored a very good goal and I thought at that moment we were going to win.

"I don't enjoy the taste of losing a semi-final. After 18 years you think it might happen some time but I didn't want it to happen tonight.

"It is about character now. Saturday will be a test and a challenge for us. I am not really worried about having to pick the players up but their recovery from this game is important. We will give them plenty of rest before the Middlesbrough game and hopefully we will get into the next round."

Fergie was asked to talk about the penalty claims and said, "What is the point? I am fed up of talking about penalties we should have had. There was one in the first game and another in this but what good does it do.

"I suppose it is the lesser of the two knock-out tournaments to go out of but it is disappointing to lose, particularly given our record in semi-finals over the years. In 18 years you expect to lose at semi-final at some point, I just did not want it to be this one. But no record lasts forever, it was fantastic while it lasted and something we can be proud of."

Mourinho, "We can win four, we can lose four, but it would be normal to win something. To win the four is very, very difficult but it is still possible. There is a long way to do it but if you could give me the Premiership I would be very happy. This is just the final though, we have not won the competition and we have to now face another great team in Liverpool.

"I do not think Roman should go into the dressing rooms again - he did and he had a shower of champagne. Maybe next time he will think twice! The feeling is fantastic and everyone will say it is a birthday gift for me, but it is not mine, it is a gift for every player as they dreamed of being in the final, it is a gift for the supporters because for the last few years they have not been in a final.

"It is also a gift for Roman because he has given a lot to the club and it is the first time he will get a real feeling of being in a final. I prefer to share it with them all."
