REACTIONS FROM LAST NIGHT

Ferguson:

"He’s certainly the best, most clinical finisher we’ve ever seen here. His record is unbelievable. It’s amazing. He’s cool with his finishing. He doesn’t panic and he has a quickness of feet as well. You hope all the chances fall to him.

"The big challenges are the biggest stage, and it is a true test of all footballers in Europe. If you look back over the last 40 years all the best players - including the likes of di Stefano, Puskas, Cruyff and Muller - have all used this competition as the big platform.

"Just when they probably thought they had a chance there Ruud killed them off a bit. Getting the first goal at home is a big advantage. We are always very tough to beat then.

"His last game was only ten days ago and he has also trained in that time. There was no problem in that sense. I don’t think we expected anything less than the sharpness we saw tonight.

"It's a disappointment not to have him for Sunday [against Man City]. But that is why I have a good squad of players. I've got Saha, Smith and Wayne Rooney and, whoever I pick, I expect them to perform well.

"All last night has done is confirm the abilities of the team. We keep saying we have to maintain the momentum but no matter which team I pick this weekend, we all deserve better than we saw on Saturday. We have to move on because every game is so important to us."

Van Nistelrooy:

"It is great. It is a good feeling to have won the game. We played some good football and as a team we did very well. The lads were looking for my movement a lot and that was my chance to score goals as well.

"I enjoy it, I enjoy playing for United and playing in every competition but the Champions League for me is very special.

"I'm not really [going for Raul's record]. For me it is just great every time I enter the stadium here and play games at Old Trafford - it's always special for me. I think we try to play good football and make the right decisions - finding whoever is in the best position to score. I tried to play in Wayne in the second half but he was offside.

"We played some good football and as a team did very well. The rest of the players were looking for my movement and that gave me the chances to score. They got it back to 2-1 and they could smell a result. To get the third finished it off. That was the one.

"I did have a rest at the weekend. You could say that I was fresher. But then, I'm used to playing a lot of games. I can't play in the Derby on Sunday, but hopefully we can do well and move on from there."
