Ralf Rangnick hails Cristiano Ronaldo's 'amazing' goal against Brighton

Interim manager Ralf Rangnick has heaped praise on Cristiano Ronaldo and the opening goal he scored in Manchester United's 2-0 win against Brighton on Tuesday evening.

The Red Devils broke back into the Premier League's top four after an inspired second-half display at Old Trafford, though had been booed off following a subpar opening 45 minutes.

Ronaldo broke the deadlock soon after the interval with a thunderous effort before Brighton captain Lewis Dunk was sent off, and Bruno Fernandes made sure of the points in stoppage time after the Seagulls tried clawing their way back into the contest.

Reports had emerged across Europe recently that Rangnick was not a popular figure in the United dressing room, particularly with Ronaldo after the German tactician insisted his star forward needed to be scoring more goals.

But speaking post-game, Rangnick hailed Ronaldo's opener as 'amazing' and revealed he was impressed by the Portuguese's performance.

"That was an amazing goal," he said. "Not only an important one but an amazing goal.

"I think overall it was a good performance by Cristiano

"Energetically, he was on there, he was always trying to help the teammates so I think in the last weeks definitely the best performance by him and a very, very important goal for us."

United move back into fourth place with Tuesday's win, two points clear of West Ham and four clear of Arsenal - though the Gunners have three games in hand over the Red Devils.

Rangnick stressed how important it was to return to winning ways after failing to beat Middlesbrough, Burnley and Southampton since the international break.

"It's a big win but we still have quite a few games to play. After three draws, two of them at home, this was a very important win and even so after the first half today," he added.

"Today for a change we had a better second half than the first half and in the second half it paid off, we were more aggressive.

"We were primed to intercept and attack them in higher positions, so a highly important win for us."
