PHIL NEAL: THE MOST DESPICABLE IN FOOTBALL?

The Mirror's Oliver Holt:

If former Liverpool and England full-back Phil Neal says one thing, the opposite must be true.

Neal is one of the most sour, dour, unappealing men in football. He once tried to bar me from doing an interview with Dion Dublin when he was Coventry manager because he said 'Dion doesn't do interviews on Thursdays'.

The phrase 'charisma bypass' was invented for Neal.

He excelled himself recently when he demanded money from The Observer for talking about the Heysel disaster. It appalled many of the other Liverpool players in action that night in Belgium in 1985 that one of them should have sunk so low. So it was hardly a surprise to see Neal saying last week that Sven Goran Eriksson should be 'hung, drawn and quartered' for, er, talking to a woman on the phone.

In fact, it was comforting to see him in the vanguard of the posse of loons calling for Eriksson's head. Because you know that if you find yourself agreeing with someone like him, it's time to run for the hills.

Ed. It's tempting to forgive Neal for he's probably still recovering from the grief Red Issue personnel gave him a few years back at a do after he claimed he would have had 5 European Cups if it wasn't for Heysel.

The irony is that he values these trophies so highly he has since sold his medals, including the loser's medal at Heysel.
