The plucky little Potteries based rugby outfit have been interested in the player before but Owen opted to come to Old Trafford on a pay as you play deal rather than sign up with Stoke.
The former England international, 32, is set to be released by Manchester United following the end of his contract which runs until the end of June, he made just four appearances for United last season although he did score three times in the Carling Cup.
Coates believes Stoke boss Tony Pulis could still be interested in the veteran, even though he is a little short for the long ball game.
Coates told Setanta Sports: “Tony is away at the moment, but that is one we could discuss when he gets back.
“He was interested in him previously.
“Michael Owen has been a fantastic player and I can see why Tony might be interested. But that will be very much a judgement for the management to make.”
