Lizarazu was part of the Bayern side that led 1-0 in Barcelona until United's two late goals, so it is claimed that there was an element of deja vu when France conjured a similar fightback in Lisbon on Sunday night.
"It was revenge for me, but with the French national team. I lost with Bayern against Manchester and it was terrible. It takes a long time to recover from something like that. For us, it took us until the final 2001 and then it was very important for us to win against Valencia. But football is incredible and we tried to fight until the end against England and eventually the luck changed. It came to France, we used it and we won."
Gary Neville dismissed Lizarazu's suggestion: "Does it remind me of 1999? Not really. If it was the final, then maybe it would have done, but we live to fight another day. I've played for a club for the past 10 years that has a habit of doing that to teams. But this would have been much more painful if it had been in the quarter-final, semi-final or final."
