From his Times column:
'However proud you are of playing for England - and anyone who knows me will tell you how much I love representing my country - your club has to remain the priority.
'That is your daily work; they pay your wages and they must come first.
'We cannot pretend that international football did not take a battering on Wednesday.'
'People have been asking, what is the point of a game such as that?...and that criticism is no good to anybody.
'But, even after all the stick (criticism), I think the manager did the right thing by playing us for only 45 minutes,' said 27-year-old Neville, who has won 54 caps for England.
'It is up to us to play better, as we have done in previous friendly matches, and make sure we do not give people the chance to attack the FA or Sven, who is only trying to look after us as players in very, very difficult circumstances.
'Until the number of matches we play is reduced, something has to give - and even sitting out 45 minutes of an England friendly makes a difference to keeping us fit.'
